  • Personal Otherkin Experiences
I initially got much of my information on therianthropy from YouTube and quickly realized that most of it was fluff and cult-y pack promotions. I continued to do research on my own and integrated my therian identity into my spiritual practices by myself. At the end of 2016, I was pushed to make a Tumblr account by a good friend and was absolutely horrified by most of the "kin community". It didn't make sense, it was consumeristic and wishy-washy, and the few people on there who were actual therians and otherkin were either shunned, impossible to separate from the masses of fluff, or exhausted from trying in vain to get their messages heard. I run a blog and make occasional posts about my own experiences and information from sites like this in an attempt to reach out and help others, but the amount of ignorance is almost impossible to cut through. Anyway, I was led to join Kinmunity and have thoroughly enjoyed both the strict filtering-out of trolls and fluff and the openness in general discussion.
  • Personal Awakening
Around the beginning of 2013 I discovered the term "therianthrope" while digging through the furry fandom and learning what a "teen werewolf" was (ugh). I did my best to research as much of it as I could, it sounded incredibly fascinating and seemed to tie right into my spiritual identity (which had just begun to be a prominent part of my life). I was very skeptical at first, and the overload of teen wolves claiming to be therians and the sheer lack of representation of anything other than wolves made it difficult because I've never felt wolf-like or even had much of an intense interest in them. Eventually, however, I experienced my first mental shift during a meditation. I wasn't really aware that it was a mental shift, but suddenly my view had changed and I found myself to be very short and padding through a lightly snowing tundra. The experience was very brief, but I came out of it with the feeling of phantom limbs that didn't leave for several hours (coughcough panic attack inducing coughcough). I continued to have these shifts and started to do research, eventually leading me to the arctic fox, and I knew almost immediately that I had found a theriotype. Over time as I started to learn how exactly therianthropy worked for me, I found that my shifts were very consistent and frequent, but at a low level, which led me to identify as a vacillant therian (the definition fits a bit better than suntherian). About a year later I discovered the concept of other-heartedness and right away knew that I was horse-hearted, and was happy to have found a term to accurately describe how I feel about horses.

  1. What's your spirit animal?

I believe I had a horse (specifically an Appaloosa) spirit guide for a very long time when I was younger. She manifested herself as an "imaginary friend"; my perception of her was vivid but she clearly didn't exist in the physical world. I noticed that she started to leave (visually at least, though I still feel she's with me in a much more abstract sense, which could potentially have to do with my horse-heartedness?) around the time I joined the advanced classes at my elementary school, but looking back on it I believe her intent was to offer me protection from the bullying I dealt with at a young age, which would explain why she has occasionally appeared since during times of interpersonal conflict. I also have a fruit bat spirit animal. He's a lot less outgoing than my dear horse friend, but I believe he is my "muse" of sorts, and usually appears during times of creativity and inspiration (which is kind of why my fursona is a fruit bat). He's definitely a very distinct personality, and definitely his own entity, but I greatly appreciate his careful supervision (superecholocation?) and the quiet motivation he gives me to express myself.
  2. Shielding and grounding techniques

I use meditation to create a "bubble", which is thin and transparent but protects me from my environment when things get overwhelming. Nothing can get inside it, and my internal thoughts can't get out. Crystal work, when done correctly, can also be beneficial because stones can create a pretty powerful shield. As far as grounding, I've found that writing down observations of my environment (5 things I can see, 4 things I can touch, 3 things I can hear, 2 things I can smell, 1 thing I can taste) can be really useful (I have disassociation/depersonalization disorder). Another simple grounding technique is holding the hand of a close friend, it helps remind you that you exist in the physical world because other people can interact with your physical body. It does require a close friend that you don't mind physical contact with though.
  3. School Dissections of Animals

I personally don't have an issue with dissections being done at higher levels. It's a hands-on way for people to actually examine how internal body systems work and fit together, and for the right set of students it can be an incredibly beneficial part of education. However, I think dissections should be saved for college-level classes purely because most students below that age are far too immature to gain anything from the exercise. I myself have seen firsthand that classroom dissections at a high school level usually end in mutilated piles of flesh and someone being pelted with organs, with little to no valuable information being absorbed in the process. There's also the matter of students who have no plans to pursue a career in anything remotely related to biology and/or are uncomfortable completing the dissections that have unfairly been deemed "mandatory". Now, granted, the younger students who actually have an interest in biology or biology-related careers may benefit from dissections performed in high school level classrooms, but the majority of students who don't have the patience or stomach to do much more than cut everything apart will surely sour the experience.
  4. I'm not...

I'm an arctic fox therian, but I'm not a "cutesy vixen".
  5. Any of you guys have pets?

I have a handsome boxer/weimaraner mix named Oliver! He is about as big as a Great Dane, all black with the exception of some toes and a unicorn-shaped white patch on his chest! I also had a family horse (belonged to my mother originally) named Amber, she was a bay Arab who lived to be 31! While I don't necessarily own him, I'm half-leasing an adorable Arab/Saddlebred cross named Steve at the barn where I ride! He's an amazing horse, and I get to visit him and work with him whenever I'd like! I am not a pack- or herd-oriented person, but being horse-hearted means I like to think I share a connection with the horses I interact with. Like with people, I find I tend to pick a buddy that works well with me and that I trust and feel comfortable with, rather than seek out a group.
  6. Meditation

I'm also an Arctic Fox therian and I meditate frequently. I don't follow any specific religion, but I think my personal beliefs tend to align the best with animism. For me, therianthropy is a very spiritual experience, and my mediatation is part of what led me to my theriotype in the first place. It's also where I've had visions of my habitat (the open tundras of what I believe to be Scandinavia) and where I have the ability to trigger shifts. But I also use meditation as a way of handling my human life, I have several different techniques for anxiety, depression, disassociation/depersonalization, and just general health of my spirit.
  7. What is your favorite kind of tea?

Cinnamon rooibos, earl grey (very picky about quality), Korean green, fruity herbal teas.
  8. What Hogwarts house are you in?

Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw Ilvermorny House: Wampus Patronus: Bat
  9. favorite childhood snack!

Apples and the snack packs with the crackers and spreadable cheese stuff with the little stick.
  10. When did you first realize you were Otherkin?

I had my "awakening" about 4 years ago. I am a spiritual therian, so much of it happened around the time I was starting to come to terms with my (limited) understanding of the universe and how it appears to me. I love animals, I've been a furry for many years and always preferred playing or dressing as an animal rather than another human (although obviously this isn't a direct indicator of therianthropy). My spiritual research led me to the concepts of things like totem animals and spirit guides and eventually therianthropy. I did some meditation and had some experiences not long after, which gave me the leads I needed to conduct research into different animals that may or may not be a theriotype of mind. Eventually, I found the arctic fox and it clicked almost immediately. The recognition when I look at them and watch their behaviours is unlike anything I feel with any other animal that I know of, and further experience and meditation has confirmed my initial feelings. About two years after my awakening I discovered the term other-hearted and found that it fit the description of my feelings with horses, hence I now identify as horse-hearted.
  11. Anyone else also a Furry?

I am a furry, I have a fruit bat fursona named Fabian and a Dutch Angel Dragon named Charlotte! I have always enjoyed anthropomorphic characters, and I love the artwork and overall fun atmosphere of the fandom! I guess you could say I'm an animal-person in more ways than one!
  12. Weird Facts About Yourself

I have synesthesia, which is disorder that causes the senses to become connected to each other. I have grapheme-colour, sound-colour, musical sounds-spatial coordinates, colour-flavour, and visual-odor. I am South Korean, I was adopted at a young age and haven't had a chance to take a trip back yet, but hopefully I will in the relatively near future. My natural vision is horrible, my right eye is 20/200 and without my glasses I cannot see more than 2 feet from my face with clarity.
  13. Favorite Quotes

"Though she be but little, she is fierce." -William Shakespeare "A fox is a wolf who sends flowers."- Ruth Brown "Don't underestimate the seductive power of a decent vocabulary." -unknown "Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend." -Albert Camus
  14. Tabletop RPGs

I ADORE tabletop, D&D in particular. I've finally found a solid group of friends through the game, and we have a great time playing and learning together. We recently began Princes of the Apocalypse and the intricacy of all our characters is really an amazing thing to see (especially considering the relative inexperience of our group). I have never been a huge video gamer, so I've found the freedom and creativity and engaging interaction of D&D to be my perfect cup of tea. So far I haven't gotten a chance to play a character like my theriotype (although Wild Shape as a Druid was fun in our last campaign), but I'm sure there will be opportunities once we get to our own homebrew campaign.
  15. Gemsonas!

I have gemsonas that are based on my fursonas which are based on me? So all of my characters are kind of interconnected. Currently, I have Apatite and Oligoclase, which I think would fuse to form Aqua Aura Quartz.
