Games Where you play as Non-Human Species

32 posts in this topic

(This is a repost since it was erased after the site went down. I was lucky enough to have this saved, but a few games might be missing if I added them after I saved my back-up.)

I wasn't sure if there was already a thread like this. This is specifically things that don't resemble humans in any aesthetic way also, this including things like Dwarfs, Elves, Gnomes, Vampires etc, sorry guys.

All my life I've hoarded such games, anything and everything where you can play as animals or fantastical creatures. Please take note, this is a list where you get to actually be or control such creatures, games that have a focus on them but don't let you play AS them are excluded.

Below I'll have collected my list of everything I remember, but if anyone here can think of any more please do post below and I'll add it to this master list!

Some of these games may not be 100% playing AS the creature, but would essentially be the same kind of gameplay. An example being where you play as someone riding a dragon, but since you're controlling the movements and actions, it's essentially the same thing.

As I said in the original thread, Skylanders lets you play as just about anything. There's a great variety of dragons, a centaur, a dog, various apes, birds, gremlins, a lion, ghosts, elves, an undead elf, an angel, a big spiky turtle...I could go on, but I won't.

For a game where you are a dragon - Dragon's Wake

We made a thread about this Dragon's Wake (here -https://www.kinmunity.com/threads/dragons-wake-short-indie-platformer.2118/), which is a game were you can play as a dragon. If this thread had existed, Dracone could have posted his recommendation for it here instead. Oh well.

_________

For a game where you play as an (arctic) fox - Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna)

You don't play as a fox most of the time, but some of the game you do. Can't say too much more because of spoilers.

- Lunatani (female, feral dog)

I should probably add something related to my kin type shouldn't I? There are virtually no games out there where you play as something that looks like a faun, but there is a very good mod for Oblivion.

I absolutely recommend Choice of the Dragon! It's a text-based multiple choice game (so not the thing for everyone, I know); it's really well done and I love the different outcomes of the game. It's definitely worth playing if you're a dragon.

Also, probably not really a valid suggestion here but there is a Minecraft mod called Morph for 1.7.10 that lets you become any type of creature you've previously killed. I love being able to play as a wolf! And the best part about it is, it works for non-vanilla mobs too. So you could find a mod that adds in a creature of your species, then all you need to do is track one down and kill it and you can play the entire game as your kintype. :D

Not sure if anyone has already said this but there is a game, on PC, Mac and Xbox One, called Ark: Survival.

You don't play as a non-human but the game has a lot of different dinosaurs, aquatic creatures and dragons.

ARK Survival Evolved isn't a game where you play as a non-human, so isn't really suited for this list.

I do enjoy the game, and I know there's a mod to be able to play as the animals, but that's not what the game is centred around so this wouldn't be the place for it. Thank you for the suggestion anyway.

Yeah, I have the mod and kind of forgot about what the game originally was like heh.

Oh, hey, I just thought of another one! It's called Arctic Tale, and it's an educational kids game for the Wii where you play as a polar bear, walrus, orca and/or Arctic fox. I remembered playing it when I was younger, but couldn't remember the name!

I mean, it's not a great game quality-wise, but it is a pretty realistic representation of those creatures (well, as realistic as you can get while still being child-friendly). So I thought I'd mention it. :)

I grew up playing 102 Dalmatians : Puppies to the Rescue on Sega Dreamcast. Seems it was on PC too. You play as either a male or female dalmatian puppy.

Short version:

Anthropomorphic games: Dust: An Elysian Tail, Breath of Fire Series

Non-anthropomorphic series: Gargoyle's Quest 1&2, Demon's Crest, EVO for SNES.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why is Dust: An Elysian Tale not in this list? I guess cuz it's anthropomorphic?

Another game series to consider is the Breath of Fire series. The main character is, depending on the game in the series, the vessel for a dragon, a member of a humanoid race that has the power to turn into a dragon, or a dragon that has the power to turn into a human. In addition to this main character, there are a number of other races who join your hero. They are all anthropomorphic, but none of them are human races. The only other fully human looking playable character is actually of a race that can fuse with other beings to become a hybrid.

Races included: Dragon shapeshifter (Every game), Bird people(Every game except 5, but 5 has a character based on them), wolf people(At least the first game), dog people(At least Bof4), kitsunes(At least Bof4), cat people (2,3,4,5), Fish people (only playable in 1 as far as I know, but in every game), ox people(At least in 1), mole people(At least in 1 and 2), a naga/lamia(At least in 1 and 2, though appears in 3 )... It's my favorite rpg series hands down, though my favorite of the series is tied for favorite RPG with Chrono Trigger.

--- Post updated ---

Also in Chrono Trigger you can play as a human cursed to look like a frog and as a robot. The former might not truly apply to this list, but Robo does. I mostly mention him because of @MechanicJasper

In addition, there is Gargoyle's Quest for Nintendo, Gargoyle's Quest 2 for Gameboy, and Demon's Crest for Super NES, all featuring the demon Firebrand as the hero.

In EVO, you play as an animal going through evolution in phases. You kill and eat other animals to gain evolution points. Those points allow you to evolve through various forms of dinosaurs, eventually either culminating in birds with the ability to fly or possibly in humans.

Since you mentioned characters who can transform into Dragons, let's include Fire Emblem. I've only played the two most recent games, Awakening and Fates. Awakening has characters that transform into dragons and characters with rabbit features that transform into giant rabbit creatures. In Fates the main character can transform into a dragon, and there are characters with the appropriate ears and tails who can transform into big wolf and fox creatures. Those two are probably my favorite characters in the series.

Also, speaking of Firebrand, you can play as him in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 along with other characters like Zero (a robot), Rocket Raccoon, and Amaterasu (from Okami).

The foxes are Kitsune from what I have heard. Also realize that in the exception of BoF5, the people who could turn into dragons were actually of a race that could do that, or else they were a dragon that masqueraded as a human. I know that certain equipment lets people do dragon transformation attacks in Fire Emblem, but I don't know if it is the equipment or the race of the being that lets them transform.

They are called Kitsune, yes. The playable member of the race, Kaden, is awesome. As for your question about dragons in Fire Emblem, it's both. There is a "weapon" for transforming during combat for game play purposes, but only for the characters who are already able to do that. In Fates (SPOILER ALERT), your character transforms into a dragon unexpectedly and goes on a rampage, and is later given an item to control it.

Then yes, that is similar to the Breath of Fire series 1st and 2nd games. The other games are more from the angle that your character IS a dragon, but can take the form of a human.

Also, Kitsune is the actual name for a race of fox that, when they get old enough, can take the form of a human. There are some kitsune on KM.

Interesting. That's not quite what the characters in Fire Emblem are, but I don't want to get too far off topic.

Faery: Legends of Avalon is a good one too. You can customize your faery character in all sorts of ways.

There's a game where you play as a Faery who shapeshifts... Kameo! Kameo: Elements of Power. Other than the shapeshifting and wings, though, she looks like an elf.

Has anyone ever played Unreal Tournament 2004? The game itself is a pretty violent one as the majority of the game involves your character needing to kill other characters in order to achieve your goal, defend your base, etc. But I love the game, my dad introduced it to me when I was pretty young. Most of the characters you can chose to be are human, but there are some humanoid, some robots, androids (I believe) and and alien species known as the Gen Mo'Kai. I always play as Nebri (One of the Gen Mo'Kai) but all the characters have pretty cool designs nonetheless.

(If UT2004 was in the list, sorry, I didn't see it. As far as I know, it's a pretty unheard-of game.)

Ah, that's a classic one. May I also add Overwatch, which features a humanoid ape among other things.

Also, Pokken Tournament. You can play as Pokémon that resemble dragons (Charizard and Garchomp), a mouse (Pikachu), ghosts (Chandelure and Gengar), an anthropomorphic dog sort of thing (Lucario), a chicken (Blaziken), and more.

P.S. You dragon folks should consider yourselves lucky, with how many choices you have.
