Alt text field / description field for rich text image formatting

I'm unsure if that's the proper way to describe it, so here is an example of what I mean (from dreamwidth):

Alt text helps to improve accessibility for users who have trouble viewing or processing pictures by providing image descriptions that can be used by screenreaders.

I know that it should be possible to add it manually just by editing the bbcode (for whatever reason I can't do it here?), but it's extremely convenient and gets used far more often when it's included directly in the rich text editor.

If I'm just completely missing where this is already implemented, then I apologize!

This likely will be a low priority feature. Alt text only loads if the image fails to load, as opposed to a title which is shown if you hover.

@Hyphero : This is true! However many screen readers fail to read title text by default, if at all, while they almost always read the alt text provided. Allowing users to provide alternative text to their images will allow people who cannot see (due to blindness, vision impairment, etc) to still know about the image even if they cannot physically see it.

Since alt text is only visible if you have disabled images, through a non-visual interface, or through Inspect Element, it can be abused.

Unfortunately, this is something that the framework lacks:For attachments:

[ATTACH=full]{{id}}[/ATTACH]

...produces...

<img src="attachments/{{filename}}.{{id}}/" alt="{{filename}}" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" />

And for external images:

[img={{url}}]

...produces...

<img src="proxy.php?image={{url}}&hash={{hash}}" alt="[img]" class="bbCodeImage LbImage" data-url="{{url}}" />

The framework lacks the field to add the alternative text to the images. It's not impossible to add one, but to achieve that would require some time and energy spent coding.About what Hyphero said, he's not wrong at all: it does download and load, just isn't displayed. Also he's just ignoring the fact that it does exist people who are blind and can be interested in hearing forums by using some screen reading solution, or people who are too lazy to read that they use some screen reading solution to have the text read for them (I'm considering using).Another noticeable thing is that internet search engines would index this page as:

Captura de tela_2016-08-16_20-12-35.png

...the "[plain][/plain]" part doesn't make any logical sense in the middle of the paragraphs, so the relevance of the page can get "penalized" for that even if the content is good.Even having reasons to implement this, there are a lot more urgent things to be done in the site before this gets implemented somehow.

Another point, not everyone is going to use alt text or even know why it would be good. Unless you're a web designer, have had images disabled, or had used a screen reader or non-visual interface, you're not going to know what alt text even does. Title, not alt, gives the text on hover, btw.

This suggestion is about user-definable alt text in the forums, not every user will use alt text.

I feel this is a useful inclusion, especially to help individuals with disabilities and for Search Engine Optimization purposes. Unfortunately, it is currently not possible with the Xenforo forum software without us creating a specific add-on for it. This is something we'll add to the (slightly long) to-do list for the future. In the mean time, this feature has been requested on a thread on the Xenforo forums. If you support this suggestion, I'd recommend registering to the Xenforo forums and replying to the suggestion thread. Generally, the developers implement suggestions which receive high public support. Core framework support is always better than needing a custom add-on!

The thread is here:

Add a title + alt option to images

As an administrator, I feel benefitting users with disabilities and increasing our search engine optimization is more important than worrying about potential obscure abuse scenarios that are unlikely to ever happen at any noticeable scale. Staff members would also be able to easily find out what alt text an image uses with the "view source" function on each post.

It does seem kinda useful, but I also feel like this could just as easily accommodated by adding a description of the image either before/after you place it in the regular forum script? If you have multiple attached images, you could just have something like:

Image 1: [A picture of a bearded dragon.]

Image 2: [A picture of a chameleon.], etc.
